5:00pm, Wed 28 Apr 2004 :  New Zealand #1
Well its been two weeks in NZ (almost) and I thought it was time that I reported
myself alive and well.

Everyone here is talking about how warm it is, particularly the travellers from
the N hemisphere.... I keep telling them that its bloody cold - but a bit is lost in
translation :-)

Have been up north and now return to Auckland. Absolutely everyone that I talk
to says that the South Island is the place to be... particularly before it gets too
much colder!

The North is interesting for a couple of reasons.
1. The east coastline is just a series of beautiful anchorages, inlets, rivers,
beachs and headlands all of which register with me as ideal places to jam
the "Queenslander", drop the anchor, and camp for a bit. It would be a great
place to cruise .... oh well, later in life.

2. I thought that there would be more bush land.... but the settlers pulled out just
about every nature plant and now the place is divvy'd up into paddocks from top
to bottom... with only a tiny amount saved. That seems such a shame and
wonder if people view our big country as the same..?

3. NZ'ers are a friendly mob. Well you know how I love to chat - yeah they're
the same! ... and I have had learnt plenty about the place and the people.

4. Hostels come in all shapes and sizes. The place here in Auckland last night
was large, loud and broken - all the others have been nice with 2 particularly
nice ones - a farm place was beautiful and a beach front - resort still place
(even with free water sports!!) and midnight eel hunter with make shift spears. :-
)

So now it is off south in the 1993 Subaru Legacy (perhaps it will become 1?)
that I got this morning for less than $2000.... The backpacker scene has a ready
market of vans, wagons and sedans! :-) Just pick your price and mode there is
a dream car waiting for you!! (just make sure that the heater works!! :-)

Soooo off I go!! Guess I am going to be here for a while longer...
Cheers
John

Quote from Ghandi
I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the culture of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible.

Pretty much my life... and I love it.

Next G Coverage
Telstra Next G coverage continues to impress. Using my Tu500 handset, I have been able to get on the net at high speed at various places. The latency of the network also seems very low when I get on. Very nice.

John speaks about Telstra Next G

Says it all : "Sailing" by Christopher Cross
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
